A she-camel was presented as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or he said, a gift was presented. He asked, "Have you accepted Islam?"I said, "No."He said, "I have been forbidden from accepting the gifts of the polytheists."
أهديت لرسول الله ﷺ ناقة- أو قال: هدية-، فقال أسلمت؟ قلت: لا. قال: إني نهيت عن زبد المشركين.
Abu Dawud (3057), Tirmidhi (1577), and Bayhaqi (9/216) all narrated it through the route of Abu Dawud Tayalisi, and it is in his Musnad (1179), he said, Imran narrated to us, from Qatada, from Yazid bin Abdullah, from Iyad bin Himar, and he related it. Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan sahih hadith." I say, its chain is hasan because of Imran, who is Ibn Dawar Qattan, for he is hasan al-hadith. Ibn Hajar said, "Abu Dawud and others reported it with a sahih chain." Matalib Aliyah (10/30).Abu Dawud Tayalisi also narrated it (1178), and Bayhaqi from his route (9/216), he said, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, Abu Tayah narrated to us, he said, Hasan narrated to us, from Iyad bin Himar, he said, "A gift was presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," and he related something similar.Hasan has been described as engaging in tadlis, and I have not found him explicitly stating that he heard directly from Iyad bin Himar, but he lived through Iyad's era for close to thirty years, and Iyad resided in Basra, and moreover he has been corroborated in the first chain.As for his statement, "the zabad of the polytheists," zabad, with the ba sakinah, means a gift or a bestowal, and the Arabs call a present zabad.
