The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is not proper for anyone to give a gift and then take it back, except for a father in what he gives to his child. The one who gives a gift and then takes it back is like a dog that eats until it is full, then vomits, and then returns to its vomit and consumes it again."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: لا ينبغي لأحد أن يعطى عطية، فيرجع فيها إلا الوالد فيما يعطيه ولده، ومثل الذي يعطي العطية، ثم يرجع فيها كالكلب يأكل حتى إذا شبع تقيأ، ثم عاد، فرجع في قيئه.
Reported by Abu Dawud (3539), Tirmidhi (2133), Nasai (3690), Ibn Majah (2377), and Ahmad (2119, 2120), and Ibn Hibban (5123), Hakim (2/46), and Bayhaqi (6/179) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through the route of Husayn the Teacher, from Amr bin Shuayb, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar, who mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Amr bin Shuayb, for his hadith is hasan.As for what is reported from Ibn Umar as a saying of the Prophet, "The one who takes back his gift is like a dog that returns to its vomit," its chain is daif. It was reported by Ibn Majah (2386), and it contains Abdullah bin Umar bin Hafs bin Asim bin Umar bin Khattab, who is daif by the agreement of the scholars.
