The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who takes back his gift is like a dog that eats until it is full, then vomits, and then returns to its vomit and eats it."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: مثل الذي يعود في عطيته، كمثل الكلب يأكل، حتى إذا شبع قاء، ثم عاد في قيئه، فأكله.
Ibn Majah (2384) narrated it from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba (it is also found in his Musannaf, 6/477), who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Awf, from Khilas, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Imam Ahmad also narrated it (7524, 10381) through the route of Awf, with the same wording. Its chain is sahih.However, there is disagreement about whether Khilas heard from Abu Hurairah. Abu Dawud said, I heard Ahmad say, Khilas did not hear anything from Abu Hurairah. Dhahabi responded to this, saying in Mizan al-Itidal (1/658), "But his narration from Abu Hurairah appears in Bukhari."I say, this is as he said, for Bukhari narrated it (3404) through the route of Awf, from Hasan, Muhammad, and Khilas, from Abu Hurairah, relating the hadith about Musa. Bukhari coupled Khilas together with Muhammad, who is Ibn Sirin, and this is evidence of a connected chain, since Muhammad bin Sirin's hearing from Abu Hurairah is established. This is the apparent conclusion. However, what complicates this is that he is also coupled together with Hasan, and his hearing from Abu Hurairah is disputed. Allah knows best what is correct.Furthermore, Imam Ahmad also narrated this hadith (10382) by another route, from Awf, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu Hurairah, relating the same. This is a strong corroboration for Khilas, and by this the hadith is established as sahih.
