A man from the tribe of Banu Fazarah presented the Prophet ﷺ with a she-camel from the herd they had captured at al-Ghabah. The Prophet ﷺ gave him something in return, but the man was displeased with it.I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say from this pulpit, "Some men of the Arabs offer me a gift, and I give them in return what I have available, then they become displeased with it and continue to show their displeasure with me. By Allah, after this moment of mine, I will not accept a gift from any Arab except from a Qurashi, an Ansari, a Thaqafi, or a Dawsi."
Tirmidhi (3946) narrated it from Muhammad bin Ismail, who said, Ahmad bin Khalid Himsi told us, Muhammad bin Ishaq told us, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it. It is also found in Adab al-Mufrad (596) through this same route. Abu Dawud (3537) narrated it through another route from Muhammad bin Ishaq, in abbreviated form without the story. Muhammad bin Ishaq is a mudallis, and he used the ambiguous form "an" here, but he has been corroborated.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan hadith, and it is more sahih than the hadith of Yazid bin Harun." He is referring to what he himself narrated (3945) just before it, from Ahmad bin Mani, who said, Yazid bin Harun told us, Ayub informed me, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned something similar, in which it says that the Prophet ﷺ compensated him with six young she-camels.Tirmidhi said, "There is more discussion about this hadith than this. He also said, this hadith has been narrated through more than one route from Abu Hurairah. Yazid bin Harun narrates from Ayub Abu Ala, who is Ayub bin Miskin, also said to be Ibn Abu Miskin, and perhaps this hadith narrated from Ayub, from Saeed Maqburi, is from this Ayub Abu Ala." End of quote.I say, this Ayub has been corroborated in the version recorded by Imam Ahmad (7918), for he narrated it from Yazid bin Harun, who said, Abu Mashar informed us, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it. Abu Mashar is Najeeh bin Abdul-Rahman Sindi, who is daif, but he has been corroborated, for Imam Ahmad (7363) narrated it from Sufyan, and Bayhaqi (6/180) narrated it from Abu Asim, both of them from Ibn Ajlan, from Saeed, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it, Ahmad narrating it in abbreviated form and Bayhaqi in detail. This hadith also has another chain of transmission from Abu Hurairah, which is what Ibn Hibban (6383) narrated from the hadith of Yahya bin Saeed Umawi, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, who mentioned it in abbreviated form, without the story.Given the sum total of these chains of transmission, this hadith is graded hasan, as Tirmidhi said, and there is no inconsistency in it.
