An Arabi gave the Prophet ﷺ a gift, and the Prophet ﷺ gave him something in return. He asked, "Are you satisfied?"The man replied, "No."So he added more and asked, "Are you satisfied?"The man replied, "No."So he added more again and asked, "Are you satisfied?"The man replied, "Yes."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "I have resolved not to accept a gift except from a Qurashi, an Ansari, or a Thaqafi."
Ahmad (2687), Tabarani in al-Kabir (10897), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (1938) all narrated it, through the route of Yunus, who said, "Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, from Amr bin Dinar, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas," and he mentioned it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (6384), and he also narrated it through the route of Yunus (who is Ibn Muhammad) with the same wording. Its isnad is sahih. But Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who connected it except Hammad." Then he narrated it from the hadith of Ibn Uyayna, from Tawus, from the Prophet ﷺ. And he said, "It is not narrated from Ibn Abbas except through this route."Daraqutni said in al-Ilal (11/33-34), "There is also a difference of opinion regarding Hammad bin Zayd. Sulayman bin Harb, Abu Rabi, and Qawariri said, from Hammad bin Zayd, from Amr, from Tawus, as a mursal narration from the Prophet ﷺ, and this is the more correct version. And it was said, from Yunus, from Hammad, from Amr, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ."I say, it is not far-fetched that Amr bin Dinar himself narrated it through two routes, one connected and one mursal, so whoever connected it from him has an addition, and whoever narrated it as mursal does not thereby invalidate it. This has many parallels in the authentic hadith collections.
