The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from two types of sales and two types of dress. He forbade mulamasah and munabadhah in trade.Mulamasah is when a man touches another's garment with his hand, by night or by day, without examining it except by that touch.Munabadhah is when one man tosses his garment to another, and the other tosses his garment back, and that constitutes their sale without inspection or mutual consent.
نهانا رسول الله ﷺ عن بيعتين ولبستين: نهي عن الملامسة والمنابذة في البيع. والملامسة لمس الرجل ثوب الآخر بيده بالليل أو بالنهار، ولا يقلبه إلا بذلك. والمنابذة: أن ينبذ الرجل إلى الرجل بثوبه، وينبذ الآخر إليه ثوبه، ويكون ذلك بيعهما من غير نظر ولا تراض.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Clothing (5820), and Muslim in the Book of Transactions (1512), both through Yunus, from Ibn Shihab (Zuhri), who said, Amir bin Saad bin Abu Waqqas informed me that Abu Saeed Khudri said, then he related it. The wording given here is Muslim's.Bukhari also narrated it in the Book of Transactions (2147) through Mamar, from Zuhri, from Ata bin Yazid, from Abu Saeed Khudri, in a shortened form, without the explanation of mulamasah and munabadhah.Abu Dawud (3377) and others narrated it from the hadith of Sufyan, from Zuhri, and it contains an explanation of two types of dress, namely wrapping oneself completely in a single garment (ishtimal al-samma), and a man sitting with his knees drawn up wrapped in a single garment while exposing his private parts, or having nothing covering his private parts from it.Regarding his prohibition of mulamasah, this has been used as evidence by those who ruled invalid the sale and purchase conducted by a blind person, since one relies on touch and careful examination only in matters that are properly ascertained through sight and visual perception.
