We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to attend a funeral. When we returned, we were met by a messenger sent from a woman of Quraysh, who said, "Messenger of Allah, so-and-so invites you and those with you to a meal."So he turned aside and we went with him. We sat in the places assigned to the youths in the presence of their fathers. Then the food was brought, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on it, and the people placed their hands on it as well. The people noticed that he was chewing a morsel without swallowing it, so they lifted their hands away. They had overlooked us, but then they remembered and took hold of our hands, with each man striking the morsel from a boy's hand until it fell. Then they held our hands, watching to see what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would do. He spat the morsel out and threw it down, saying, "I detect the flesh of a sheep taken without its owners' permission."The woman rose and said, "Messenger of Allah, I had set my mind on gathering you and those with you over a meal, so I sent to Baqi but found no sheep for sale. Amir bin Ubayy Waqqas had bought a sheep yesterday from Baqi, so I sent to him asking him to find me a sheep at Baqi, but none could be found. He told me that you had bought a sheep, so he sent it to me. My messenger did not find him, but found his household, who handed it over to my messenger."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Feed it to the prisoners."
Reported by Abu Dawud (3332) and Ahmad (22509), from Muawiya bin Amr, "Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Zaida, from Asim bin Kulayb, from his father, that a man from the Ansar informed him," and he related it.Its isnad is hasan because of Asim bin Kulayb and his father, for the two of them are graded hasan in hadith. The wording given here is that of Ahmad, while Abu Dawud added at its beginning the story of the Prophet ﷺ sitting at the edge of the grave, which is mentioned in the Book of Funerals, in the chapter on widening the grave.
