Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will deal with Kaab bin al-Ashraf? He has caused harm to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ."Muhammad bin Maslama said, "I will."So he came to Kaab and said, "We would like you to lend us a wasq or two of food."Kaab replied, "Pledge your women to me as security."They said, "How can we pledge our women to you when you are the most handsome of the Arabs?"He said, "Then pledge your sons to me."They replied, "How can we pledge our sons? One of them would be insulted, with people saying, 'He was pledged for a wasq or two,' and this would be a disgrace upon us. But we will pledge our weapons to you."Sufyan explained that al-lamah means weapons.So he agreed to meet them, and they killed him. Then they came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him.

عن جابر بن عبد الله قال

قال رسول الله ﷺ: من لكعب بن الأشرف؛ فإنه قد آذى الله ورسوله ﷺ؟ قال محمد بن مسلمة: أنا. فأتاه فقال: أردنا أن تسلفنا وسقا أو وسقين. فقال: ارهنوني نساءكم. قالوا: كيف نرهنك نساءنا وأنت أجمل العرب؟ قال: فارهنوني أبناءكم. قالوا: كيف نرهن أبناءنا؛ فيسب أحدهم، فيقال: رهن بوسق أو وسقين، هذا عار علينا، ولكنا نرهنك اللأمة.- قال سفيان: يعني السلاح- فوعده أن يأتيه، فقتلوه، ثم أتوا النبي ﷺ، فأخبروه.
