Abu Rafi reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ borrowed a young camel. Later, camels from the zakat collection came to him.Abu Rafi said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to repay the man his young camel. I said, 'I could not find among the camels anything but a choice, mature seven-year-old camel.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give it to him, for the best of people are those who repay their debts in the best manner."
أنه قال: استسلف رسول الله ﷺ بكرا فجاءته إبل من الصدقة. قال أبو رافع: فأمرني رسول الله ﷺ أن أقضي الرجل بكره، فقلت: لم أجد في الإبل إلا جملا خيارا رباعيا، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: أعطه إياه؛ فإن خيار الناس أحسنهم قضاء.
Malik narrated it in the Book of Sales (89) from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Rafi, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he said, and he mentioned it. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Musaqah (1600:118) through the route of Malik, in a similar wording.Malik said, "There is no harm if someone who lent gold, silver, food, or livestock receives back something better than what he lent, from the person he lent it to, as long as this was not by prior condition or custom between the two of them. But if it was by condition, promise, or custom, then that is disliked, and there is no good in it."His statement, "or promise," means a pledge.
