Abdullah bin Umar used to lease out his lands until news reached him that Rafi bin Khadij al-Ansari was forbidding the leasing of land. Abdullah met him and asked, "Ibn Khadij, what is this you are reporting from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the leasing of land?"Rafi bin Khadij said to Abdullah, "I heard my two uncles, who had both witnessed Badr, telling the people of the house that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the leasing of land."Abdullah said, "I certainly knew that during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ land was being leased."Then Abdullah feared that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ might have introduced some new ruling on the matter that he had not known about, so he gave up leasing land.
أن عبد الله بن عمر كان يكري أرضيه، حتى بلغه أن رافع بن خديج الأنصاري كان ينهي عن كراء الأرض، فلقيه عبد الله، فقال: يا ابن خديج، ماذا تحدث عن رسول الله ﷺ في كراء الأرض؟ قال رافع بن خديج لعبد الله: سمعت عمي- وكانا قد شهدا بدرا- يحدثان أهل الدار: أن رسول الله ﷺ نهي عن كراء الأرض. قال عبد الله: لقد كنت أعلم في عهد رسول الله ﷺ أن الأرض تكرى، ثم خشي عبد الله أن يكون رسول الله ﷺ أحدث في ذلك شيئا لم يكن علمه، فترك كراء الأرض.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Farming and Sharecropping (2345), and Muslim (1547: 12), both from the hadith of Layth, who said, Aqeel bin Khalid told me, from Ibn Shihab, that he said, Salim bin Abdullah informed me, and he related it. The wording given is Muslim's, and Bukhari's wording is abridged.
