The Prophet ﷺ said, "The example of the Muslims, the Jews, and the Christians is like that of a man who hired some workers to do a job for him from morning until night for a set wage. They worked for him until midday and then said, 'We have no need for the wage you promised us, and whatever we have done is void.' He said to them, 'Do not do this. Complete the rest of your work and take your full wage.' But they refused and abandoned the work.So he hired another group after them and said to them, 'Complete the remainder of this day, and you will have the same wage I promised the others.' They worked until the time of the afternoon prayer, then said, 'Whatever we have done for you is void, and you may keep the wage you set aside for us.' He said to them, 'Complete the rest of your work, for only a small portion of the day remains.' But they refused. So he hired yet another group to do the remainder of the day's work for him, and they worked through the rest of the day until the sun set, earning the full wages of both previous groups. That is the example of them and of the light they accepted."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Hiring (2271) from Muhammad bin Ala, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Burayd, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, and he related it. As for what has been narrated from Abu Saeed Khudri, "that the Prophet ﷺ forbade hiring a worker until his wage is made clear, and forbade najash, and touching, and casting a stone," this is munqati (broken in transmission). It was narrated by Ahmad (11565), Abu Dawud in his Marasil (169), and from him Bayhaqi (6/120), all of them through Hammad (Ibn Salama), from Hammad (Ibn Abu Sulayman), from Ibrahim, from Abu Saeed, and he related it. The wording given is that of Ahmad. As for Abu Dawud, he confined himself to the prohibition of hiring a worker without making the wage clear.Bayhaqi said, This is a mursal narration, with a gap between Ibrahim and Abu Saeed. I say, Ibrahim is Ibn Yazid Nakhai, who did not hear from Abu Saeed Khudri. Haythami identified this defect in Majma (4/97), as did Ibn Hajar in Talkhis (3/60).Hammad bin Abu Sulayman was accused of frequent confusion, and he indeed erred in this hadith. At one time he narrated it as above, at another from Ibrahim from Abu Hurairah, and at a third from Ibrahim from Abu Saeed as his own statement, as found with Nasai (7/31-32), and this last version is the one preferred by Abu Zura, as mentioned in Ilal Ibn Abu Hatim (2/443). He has other routes in which he likewise erred, which Bayhaqi mentioned in his Kubra, and in his Sughra (5/416).For this reason Imam Ahmad said, "In what Hammad bin Salama narrates from him there is much confusion."
