The people of the pre-Islamic era used to trade the meat of slaughtered camels on credit until habal al-habalah, meaning until the she-camel gave birth and then the offspring she bore became pregnant in turn. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from this practice.
كان أهل الجاهلية يتبايعون لحم الجزور إلى حبل الحبلة. - وحبل الحبلة أن تنتج الناقة، ثم تحمل التي نتجت- فنهاهم رسول الله ﷺ عن ذلك.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Salam (2256) through the route of Juwayriyah, and Muslim in the Book of Sales (1514:6) through the route of Ubaydullah, both of them from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, who said what has been mentioned. The wording given is that of Muslim. Bukhari's wording is similar, and in it he makes explicit that the explanation comes from Nafi. The hadiths in the preceding chapters show that it is permissible to make a salam contract for food, clothing, and other things that can be precisely described, even if the item is not present at the time of the contract, such as cars, electrical appliances, household furniture, and the like. It is a condition for salam that the capital sum, or part of it, be handed over at the time of the contract. There are other issues on this subject which I have discussed in detail in Minna Kubra (5/234), so refer to it.
