I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "A borrowed item must be returned, and a gifted loan must be given back."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: العارية مؤداة، والمنحة مردودة.
Ibn Majah (2399) narrated it from Hisham bin Ammar and Abdul-Rahman bin Ibrahim, the two Damascenes, who said, Muhammad bin Shuayb told us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it.Ahmad (22507) narrated it with another chain from Abdul-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, from Saeed bin Abu Saeed, from someone who heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "Indeed, the borrowed item must be returned, the gift-loan must be given back, the debt must be repaid, and the guarantor is liable."The unnamed companion in Imam Ahmad's version is Anas bin Malik, as is made explicit in Ibn Majah's version. Its chain is hasan, because there is disagreement over the identity of Saeed bin Abu Saeed, who he actually is. Is he "Maqburi, the trustworthy one," to whom he is attributed in some narrations, or "Sahili, the unknown one," to whom he is also attributed in other narrations? Preferring one over the other would be an arbitrary judgment without decisive evidence, and the hadith does not fall below the level of hasan since there is no one accused of fabrication in it. It has supporting evidence, some of which follows.
