Ibn Majah (2398), Tirmidhi (1265), Abu Dawud (3565), and Ahmad (22294) all narrated it through Ismail bin Ayyash, who said, "Shurahbil bin Muslim told me, saying, 'I heard Abu Umama,'" and he mentioned the hadith. The wording given is that of Ibn Majah. The wording of Abu Dawud is, "Allah has given each rightful claimant his due, so no bequest may be made to an heir, and a woman may not spend anything from her household without her husband's permission." It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, not even food?" He said, "That is the best of our wealth." Then he said, "A borrowed item must be returned, a gift on loan must be given back, a debt must be repaid, and the guarantor is liable."Tirmidhi said, "Hasan gharib." I say, it is as he said, for Ismail bin Ayyash is hasan in his narration from the people of his own region, the Levantines, and this hadith belongs to that category, while in his narration from others he is confused.Tirmidhi said, "It has also been narrated from Abu Umama, from the Prophet ﷺ, through another route as well." By this he means the lengthy hadith that has been narrated through many routes, whose scattered parts will be mentioned in their proper places.
