The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear two coarse Qatari garments, and whenever he sat and perspired, they felt heavy on him. A shipment of cloth arrived from Sham belonging to a certain Jewish man, so I said, "Why don't you send to him and buy two garments from him on credit until a time of ease?"He sent word to the man, who replied, "I know what he wants. He only intends to take my property," or, "my dirhams."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He has lied. He knows full well that I am the most God-fearing of them and the most faithful in returning a trust."
كان على رسول الله ﷺ ثوبان قطريان غليظان، فكان إذا قعد فعرق ثقلا عليه، فقدم بر من الشام لفلان اليهودي، فقلت: لو بعثت إليه، فاشتريت منه ثوبين إلى الميسرة، فأرسل إليه، فقال: قد علمت ما يريد، إنما يريد أن يذهب بمالي أو بدراهمي. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: كذب، قد علم أني من أتقاهم الله وآداهم للأمانة.
Tirmidhi (1213) and Nasai (4628) narrated it, and Hakim (2/23-24) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through the hadith of Yazid bin Zuray, from Umara bin Abu Hafsa, from Ikrima, from Ayesha, and he related it as mentioned.Tirmidhi said, "hasan gharib sahih."Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Bukhari."Tirmidhi and Hakim both said, "Shuba also narrated it from Umara bin Abu Hafsa."I say, from the route of Shuba, Imam Ahmad (25141) narrated it, and Hakim narrated it in a similar manner.Tirmidhi said, "I heard Muhammad bin Firas Basri say, I heard Abu Dawud say, 'Shuba was once asked about this hadith, and he said, "I will not narrate it to you until you go to Harmi bin Umara bin Abu Hafsa and kiss his head."' He said, and Harmi was among the people present."Tirmidhi said, "That is, out of admiration for this hadith."As for his words "until al-maysara," this means a specified term in which there is ease, for otherwise, uncertainty about the term would invalidate the sale.Similar in meaning is what has been reported from Anas bin Malik, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Hulayq the Christian, so that he might send him some garments until al-maysara. I went to him and said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you, that you send him garments until al-maysara.' He said, 'And what is al-maysara? And when is al-maysara? By Allah, Muhammad has neither a bleating sheep nor a lowing camel.' So I went back and came to the Prophet ﷺ, and when he saw me, he said, 'The enemy of Allah has lied. I am the best of traders. For one of you to wear a garment made of many different patches is better for him than to take, on the strength of his trustworthiness (or, in his trustworthiness), something he does not possess.'"Ahmad (13559) narrated it from Muhammad bin Yazid, who said, Abu Salama, the food seller, narrated to us, saying, Jabir bin Yazid -not Jabir Jafi- narrated to me, from Rabi bin Anas, from Anas, and he mentioned it.Abu Salama and Jabir bin Yazid are both unknown.Haythami said in Majma (4/125), "Jabir bin Yazid, I did not find anyone who gave his biography."Bazzar narrated it (in Kashf Astar, 1305) through another route, which includes Usayd bin Zayd, who is daif.
