Musa bin Salama reported,

I set out for Umrah together with Sinan bin Salama. Sinan took along a sacrificial camel which he was driving, but along the way it became exhausted and unable to continue. He was at a loss as to what to do with it. He wondered, if it gave out completely, how would he bring it along? He said, "When I reach the city, I will inquire thoroughly about this matter."So we proceeded on. When we camped at al-Batha, he said, "Let us go to Ibn Abbas and speak with him." He told him about the situation with his sacrificial camel.Ibn Abbas said, "You have come to one well-informed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent sixteen sacrificial camels with a man and gave him instructions concerning them. The man set out, then returned and asked, 'Messenger of Allah, what shall I do with any of them that becomes unable to continue?'He replied, 'Slaughter it, then dip its sandals in its blood and place them on its flank. But neither you nor any of your companions are to eat from it.'"

Sahih
