It was reported from the Prophet ﷺ that he was seen at his resting place in Dhul-Hulayfah, in the bottom of the valley, and it was said to him, "You are in a blessed plain."Salim made us halt our mounts at the very spot where Abdullah used to halt his, seeking out the resting place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It lies below the mosque that stands in the bottom of the valley, midway between the mosque and the road.
عن النبي ﷺ أنه رئي وهو في معرس بذي الحليفة ببطن الوادي، قيل له: إنك ببطحاء مباركة. وقد أناخ بنا سالم يتوخى بالمناخ الذي كان عبد الله ينيخ، يتحرى معرس رسول الله ﷺ، وهو أسفل من المسجد الذي ببطن الوادي، بينهم وبين الطريق وسط من ذلك.
Bukhari narrated it in the Hajj chapter (1535), and Muslim in the Hajj chapter (1346:433), both through Musa bin Uqba, from Salim, from his father. The wording given is that of Bukhari, while Muslim's wording is abbreviated, limiting itself to the part attributed to the Prophet. As for the Prophet ﷺ stopping to rest at Zulhulayfa on his return, this is not established in any sahih report. Nawawi quoted from Qadi Iyad, using a phrase indicating weakness, saying, "It has been said that the Prophet ﷺ only stopped there on his return so that he would arrive in the morning, in order not to surprise his family by night, as he explicitly forbade doing in the well-known hadiths," and those who came after him relied on this. As for descending and praying there, this was the view of Ibn Umar, and none of the companions agreed with him on it, because the Prophet's ﷺ stopping at Zulhulayfa was like his stopping anywhere else along the road to Makkah, since he would pray the obligatory prayer wherever its time overtook him.
