until he reached the valley of Muhassir, where he urged his mount on a little, then took the middle road.
حتى أتى بطن محسر، فحرك قليلا، ثم سلك الطريق الوسطى.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj (1218) via Hatim bin Ismail Madani, from Jafar bin Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir, mentioning it at length in the description of the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj. His saying, "Batn Muhassir" is with the mim vowelled with damma, the ha with fatha, and the doubled sin with kasra, both being unvoweled consonants. It was given this name because the elephant of the People of the Elephant became exhausted and worn out there, that is, it grew weary and tired, as explained in Nawawi's commentary (8/189). This is related to the words of Allah Almighty, "Then look again and again, your sight will return to you dazzled and worn out" [Mulk 67:4].
