Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

The practice of rushing began with the people of the desert. They used to stand at both sides of the crowd, hanging up sticks, quivers, and wooden bowls. When their camels were driven on, those items would clatter together, causing the people's mounts to bolt.He said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the back of his camel's ear touching its withers, and he was gesturing with his hand, saying, 'People, maintain calm. People, maintain calm.'"
