I arrived in Mecca while menstruating, so I did not perform circumambulation around the Kaaba nor walk between Safa and Marwa. She said, I complained about this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Do as the pilgrim does, except do not circumambulate the Kaaba until you become pure."
Bukhari related it in the Hajj chapter (1650), from Abdullah bin Yusuf, who said, Malik informed us, from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, from his father, from Ayesha, and he related it as mentioned. This hadith is also found in the Muwatta of Imam Malik, in the Hajj chapter (244), through the narration of Yahya Laythi from him, with the same chain and the same wording, except that he added in it, "nor between Safa and Marwa."I say, others besides Malik have related it from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim without mentioning this addition. Bukhari related it also in the chapter on menstruation (294), and Muslim in the Hajj chapter (1211:119), both of them by way of Sufyan bin Uyayna, who said, I heard Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim say, I heard Qasim say, I heard Ayesha say, "We set out intending nothing but Hajj. When we reached Sarif, I began menstruating. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to me while I was crying. He said, 'What is wrong with you? Have you begun your menses?' I said, Yes. He said, 'This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. So do everything the pilgrim does, except that you must not perform tawaf around the House.'" She said, "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed cattle on behalf of his wives."Their two wordings are the same, and Muslim added, "until you have purified yourself."Bukhari related it in the chapter on menstruation (305), and Muslim in the Hajj chapter (1211:120), both of them by way of Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Salama Majishun, from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, with the same chain, and in it, "So do what the pilgrim does, except that you must not perform tawaf around the House until you are purified." This version makes no mention of the running between Safa and Marwa.Ritual purity is not a condition for the running between Safa and Marwa according to most scholars of knowledge, except that a woman in this state leaves off both the tawaf and the running until she is purified, just as Ayesha did.
