She said, "We used to prevent our young women from going out. Then a woman arrived and stayed at the palace of Banu Khalaf. She related that her sister had been married to one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who had taken part in twelve military campaigns with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and her sister had accompanied him in six of them. She said, 'We used to tend to the wounded and care for the sick.'My sister asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Is there any harm if one of us does not go out because she has no outer garment?'He answered, 'Let her companion lend her one of her own garments, so she may witness the good and the supplication of the believers.'"When Umm Atiya arrived, they asked her, or she said, "We asked her." She, who never mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ without saying, "May my father be sacrificed for him," replied. We asked, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say such and such?"She said, "Yes, may my father be sacrificed for him. He said, 'Let the young women in seclusion go out,' or 'the young women and those in seclusion, and the menstruating women, so they may witness the good and the supplication of the Muslims, but let the menstruating women keep away from the prayer area.'"I asked, "The menstruating woman?"She replied, "Does she not witness Arafah, and witness this and witness that?"
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Hajj (1652), by way of Ayub, from Hafsa (that is, bint Sirin), and he related it as mentioned. Muslim also reported it in the Book of the Two Eid Prayers (890), through other routes, from Hafsa bint Sirin, from Umm Atiya, with the same content but in abbreviated form, and it does not contain her saying, "Does she not witness Arafah, and witness this, and witness that?"
