Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ uncovered his right shoulder, touched the Black Stone, and pronounced the takbir, then he jogged through three circuits. Whenever they reached the Yemeni Corner and were out of sight of the Quraysh, they would walk, and then they would come back into view jogging. The Quraysh remarked, "They look like gazelles."Ibn Abbas said, "So this became an established practice."
أن النبي ﷺ اضطبع، فاستلم وكبر، ثم رمل ثلاثة أطواف، وكانوا إذا بلغوا الركن اليماني وتغيبوا من قريش مشوا، ثم يطلعون عليهم يرملون، تقول قريش: كأنهم الغزلان، قال ابن عباس: فكانت سنة.
Abu Dawud (1889) and Ibn Majah (2953) both narrated it through the hadith of Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu Tufayl, from Ibn Abbas, who related the hadith, and the wording given here is that of Abu Dawud. In a wording found in Ibn Majah, the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions when they intended to enter Makkah for their umrah after Hudaybiya, "Tomorrow your people will see you, so let them see you looking strong."Imam Ahmad also narrated it (2792), and Ibn Khuzayma (2700) and Ibn Hibban (3814) both graded it sahih, all of them through this same route, though Ibn Khuzayma related it in abridged form. Its chain is hasan on account of some discussion regarding Ibn Khuthaym, for he is truthful, and Hafiz Munziri and others have likewise graded it hasan.
