Why do we hasten in our walk today and bare our shoulders, when Allah has firmly established Islam and driven out disbelief and its people? Even so, we will not abandon anything we used to do in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
فيم الرملان اليوم، والكشف عن المناكب، وقد أطأ الله الإسلام ونفى الكفر وأهله؟ مع ذلك لا ندع شيئا كنا نفعله على عهد رسول الله ﷺ.
Abu Dawud (1887) narrated it from Ahmad bin Hanbal, and it is also found in his Musnad (317), and Ibn Majah (2952) also narrated it, all of them through the hadith of Hisham bin Saad, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, who said, "I heard Umar say," and then he mentioned it.Its chain is hasan because of the discussion surrounding Hisham bin Saad, the Madani, Abu Abbad, about whom there is disagreement. Ibn Main and Nasai declared him daif, while others accepted him, so his hadith is hasan.Ibn Khuzayma (2708) and Hakim (1/454) both graded it sahih through this route, and Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of Muslim."Its foundation is found in Sahih Bukhari (1605), as mentioned previously.Ibn Khuzayma said, "A practice may be established by the Prophet ﷺ because of some particular circumstance, and then that circumstance passes away while the practice remains forever. For the Prophet ﷺ walked briskly at the outset and bared his shoulder, in order to show the polytheists his own strength and the strength of his companions, so the baring of the shoulder and the brisk walking remained as two established practices forever."
