Imam Ahmad (22031) narrated it from Rawh, who said, Hajjaj bin Aswad narrated to us, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Muaz bin Jabal, and he related it. This chain contains Shahr bin Hawshab, about whom there is discussion, along with a break in the chain, since he never met Muaz bin Jabal.However, Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (20/78), Bazzar in Bahr Zakhkhar (2672), and Abdullah bin Mubarak in Zuhd (715), all of them through the hadith of Abdul-Hameed bin Bahram, from Shahr bin Hawshab, who said, Aidullah bin Abdullah narrated to me, saying, I said to Muaz bin Jabal, and he related the story. Aidullah is Abu Idris Khawlani, and there has been disagreement over whether he heard directly from Muaz bin Jabal, but the correct view is that he did hear from him.Hakim also recorded it (4/169) through another route from Abu Idris, from Muaz bin Jabal, and said, "This is a sahih hadith meeting the standard of the two Shaykhs, and Abu Idris, through a sahih chain, brought together Muaz and Ubada bin Samit in this text." See further citations in the chapter on Allah's establishment over the Throne.I add here that it was also narrated by Abdullah bin Ahmad in the additions to the Musnad (22782) and by Ibn Hibban (577), through the route of Abu Malih Raqqi, from Habib bin Abu Marzuq, from Ata bin Abu Rabah, from Abu Muslim Khawlani, who said, I said to Muaz bin Jabal, and he related the hadith, adding to it, "The prophets and the martyrs will envy them their position," and it contains a story. Abu Malih is Hasan bin Umar Fazari, their freedman, trustworthy, as the Hafiz said.
