When the Prophet ﷺ came to Mecca, he entered from its upper side and left from its lower side.
أن النبي ﷺ لما جاء إلى مكة دخل من أعلاها وخرج من أسفلها.
This was narrated by Bukhari in the Hajj (1577) and Muslim in the Hajj (1258:224), both through the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, as mentioned above.Bukhari also narrated it (1578), and Muslim (1258:225), both through the route of Abu Usama (that is, Hammad bin Usama), who said, Hisham bin Urwa narrated to us, from his father, from Ayesha, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered in the year of the conquest through Kadaa, and left through Kada from the upper part of Makkah. The wording here follows Bukhari. Muslim does not include "and left through Kada... etc." Instead he adds, Hisham said, "My father used to enter through both of them, but he most often entered through Kadaa."Regarding the word "Kadaa" (with a fatha on the kaf and a long vowel), this is the mountain pass from which one descends to Maala, the burial ground of the people of Makkah, also called Hajun. As for "he left through Kada" (with a damma on the kaf and a short vowel), this is located near Bab Shubaika, and this gate was built there in the seventh century. As for the phrase "from the upper part of Makkah," Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari (3/437), "This is how Abu Usama narrated it, reversing it, but the correct version is what Amr and Hatim narrated from Hisham, 'He entered through Kadaa, from the upper part of Makkah.' It later became clear to me that the error came from someone below Abu Usama in the chain, for Ahmad narrated it from Abu Usama with the correct wording."
