A woman from Khathaam said, "Messenger of Allah, my father is an elderly man upon whom Allah's obligation of Hajj has fallen, but he cannot sit upright on the back of his camel."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Then perform Hajj on his behalf."
أن امرأة من خثعم قالت: يا رسول الله إن أبي شيخ كبير عليه فريضة الله في الحج وهو لا يستطيع أن يستوي على ظهر بعيره؟ فقال النبي ﷺ: فحجي عنه.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on the recompense for hunting (1853), and Muslim in the chapter on Hajj (1335), both through the route of Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Sulayman bin Yasar narrated to us, from Ibn Abbas, from Fadl, and he mentioned it. The wording given is Muslim's. Bukhari did not present his own wording, but rather referred it back to the hadith of Ibn Abbas.Humaydi said, "Some narrators did not mention Fadl in it, making it instead part of the musnad of Ibn Abbas." Al-Jam Bayn al-Sahihayn (2781), and this is the hadith that follows. His saying, "perform Hajj on his behalf," contains proof for the permissibility of a woman performing Hajj on behalf of a man. Nasai (2643) and Ibn Khuzayma (3033) titled a chapter based on this point, and both mentioned this hadith in it.
