The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Many a person who fasts gains nothing from his fasting but hunger, and many a person who stands in prayer at night gains nothing from his standing but sleeplessness."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: رب صائم ليس له من صيامه إلا الجوع، ورب قائم ليس له من قيامه إلا السهر.
Ibn Majah (1690) narrated it from Amr bin Rafi, who said, Abdullah bin Mubarak told us, from Usama bin Zayd, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah, who said (he then mentioned it). Its isnad is hasan due to what has been said about Usama bin Zayd, who is Laythi, for there is disagreement about him and he used to make many mistakes, though his hadith is hasan. Imam Ahmad (9685) narrated it by this same route, and Amr bin Abu Amr corroborated it, from Saeed Maqburi. Ibn Hibban (3481) and Bayhaqi (4/270) narrated it by his route. Abu Yaala (6551), Ibn Khuzayma (1997), and Hakim (1/431) narrated it, saying, Amr bin Abu Amr, from Abu Saeed Maqburi.Amr bin Abu Amr, whose name was Maysara, the freedman of Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Hantab, was deemed reliable by Ibn Main and Ahmad, and Abu Hatim said, he is truthful. So he is a strong corroborator for Usama bin Zayd, and he narrates from Saeed, and from his father Abu Saeed, whose name was Kaysan.
