He heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "Do not practice continuous fasting. Whoever among you wishes to extend his fast may continue until the predawn meal."They said, "But you yourself practice continuous fasting, Messenger of Allah."He replied, "I am not like you. I spend the night with One who feeds me and gives me drink."
أنه سمع النبي ﷺ يقول: لا تواصلوا، فأيكم إذا أراد أن يواصل فليواصل حتى السحر. قالوا: فإنك تواصل يا رسول الله. قال: إني لست كهيئتكم إني أبيت لي مطعم يطعمني، وساق يسقين.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Fasting (1963) from Abdullah bin Yusuf, who said, "Layth narrated to us," who said, "Ibn Hadi narrated to me," from Abdullah bin Khabab, from Abu Saeed Khudri, and he related it.This hadith contains permission for fasting continuously up to suhoor, meaning that the fasting person eats suhoor, then continues his fast until the next suhoor, without eating anything at night. Ahmad and a group of the Malikis, along with some scholars, held this view. The Prophet ﷺ used to do this sometimes, as in the hadiths of Jabir and Ali that will come at the end of the chapter.
