Muawiya bin Qurra reported,

I came to Medina during the season of dried curd and clarified butter, when the Bedouins were bringing barqan fruit to sell. I noticed a man with his gaze fixed, watching the people, and I thought he was a stranger. So I approached him and greeted him. He returned my greeting and asked me, "Are you from the people of this town?"I said, "Yes," and sat down with him. I asked, "Who are your people?"He replied, "From Hilal, and my name is Kahmas." Or he said to me, "From Banu Salul, and my name is Kahmas."Then he said, "Shall I tell you something I witnessed from Umar bin Khattab?"I said, "Certainly."He said, "While we were sitting with him, a woman came and sat down before him and said, 'Commander of the Believers, my husband's evil has grown great and his good has grown small.'Umar رضي الله عنه asked her, 'And who is your husband?'She said, 'Abu Salama.'Umar said, 'That man is one of the companions, and he is a truthful man.' Then Umar turned to a man sitting beside him and asked, 'Isn't that so?'The man replied, 'Commander of the Believers, we know him only as you have described.'Umar then said to a man, 'Get up and call him for me.' When he sent for her husband, the woman rose and sat behind Umar. It was not long before the two arrived together and sat down before Umar.Umar asked, 'What do you say about this woman sitting behind me?'He said, 'And who is she, Commander of the Believers?'Umar said, 'She is your wife.'He said, 'And what does she say?'Umar said, 'She claims that your good has grown small and your evil has grown great.'He said, 'What an awful thing she has said, Commander of the Believers. She is among the most virtuous of women, the best clothed of them, and enjoys the most comfortable living. But her husband simply has little to give.'Umar asked, 'What do you say?'She said, 'He has spoken truthfully.'Then Umar got up and went toward her with the lash and struck her with it, saying, 'You enemy of yourself, you have consumed his wealth and exhausted his youth, and now you come making accusations of things that are not true!'She said, 'Commander of the Believers, do not hasten. By Allah, I will never sit in such a place again.'Then he ordered three garments to be given to her and said, 'Take these in compensation for what I did to you. And beware of complaining about this old man again.' It is as though I can still see her standing up with the garments in her arms. Then he turned to her husband and said, 'Do not let what you saw me do to her lead you to mistreat her. Go, both of you.'The man said, 'I would never do such a thing.'Then Umar said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The best of my community is the generation of which I am a part, then the second, then the third. Then there will arise a people whose oaths outrun their testimony, and whose testimony outruns their oaths. They will give testimony without being asked to, and there will be clamor in their marketplaces."'"He said, "Kahmas said to me, 'Do you not fear that these people are among those?'"Then Kahmas said to me, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of my acceptance of Islam. Then I was absent from him for a year. When I came to him, I said, 'Messenger of Allah, it seems you do not recognize me.'He said, 'Indeed.'I said, 'Messenger of Allah, I have not broken my fast since I parted from you.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Who commanded you to torment yourself? Fast one day of the month.'I said, 'Give me more.'He said, 'Then fast two days.'Until he said, 'Then fast three days of the month.'"
