I was reclining beside Ayesha when she said, "Abu Ayesha, there are three things, whoever says any one of them has uttered a tremendous lie against Allah."I asked, "What are they?"She replied, "Whoever claims that Muhammad ﷺ saw his Lord has uttered a tremendous lie against Allah."I had been reclining, so I sat up and said, "Umm Muiminin, give me a moment and do not rush me. Did Allah not say, 'And he certainly saw him on the clear horizon' [Takwir 81:23], and 'And he certainly saw him in another descent' [Najm 53:13]?"She said, "I am the first of this nation to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this. He said, 'That was only Jibreel. I never saw him in the form in which he was created except on those two occasions. I saw him descending from the heavens, the immensity of his form filling the space between sky and earth.'"Then she said, "Have you not heard that Allah says, 'Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision. He is the Subtle, the All-Aware' [Anam 6:103]? Have you not heard that Allah says, 'It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a veil or by sending a messenger to reveal, by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High, All-Wise' [Shura 42:51]?"She continued, "And whoever claims that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concealed any part of the Book of Allah has uttered a tremendous lie against Allah, for Allah says, 'Messenger, convey what has been sent down to you from your Lord, for if you do not, you will not have conveyed His message' [Maidah 5:67]."She said, "And whoever claims that he knew what would happen tomorrow has uttered a tremendous lie against Allah, for Allah says, 'Say, none in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah' [Naml 27:65]."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (177) from Zuhayr bin Harb, who said, Ismail bin Ibrahim (that is, Ibn Ulaya) narrated to us, from Dawud (bin Abu Hind), from Shaybi, from Masruq, and he related it.Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir (4855), and Muslim, both from the hadith of Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Amir Shaybi, in shortened form, in which it states, Ayesha said, "Glory be to Allah! My hair stood on end at what you said..." and he continued the hadith.Muslim said, The hadith of Dawud is more complete and longer, meaning the one he mentioned. She also said, If Muhammad ﷺ had concealed anything of what was revealed to him, he would have concealed this verse, "And [remember] when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and to whom you had also done a favor, 'Keep your wife and fear Allah,' while you concealed within yourself what Allah was about to disclose, and you feared the people, whereas Allah has more right that you should fear Him" [Ahzab 33:37].Muslim narrated it via another route from Dawud bin Abu Hind with his chain of transmission.
