Masruq reported,

I said to Ayesha, "Then what about His words, 'Then he drew near and came down, until he was within two bow-lengths or nearer' [Najm 53:8–9]?"She replied, "That was Jibreel. He used to come to him in the form of a man, but on this occasion he came to him in his own true form, and he filled the whole horizon."

عن مسروق قال

قلت لعائشة: فأين قوله: {ثم دنا فتدلى فكان قاب قوسين أو أدنى} [سورة النجم: ٨- ٩] قالت: ذاك جبريل، كان يأتيه في صورة الرجل، وإنه أتاه هذه المرة في صورته التي هي صورته فسد الأفق.
