Qabisa bin Mukhariq reported,

Qabisa said, "I undertook a financial responsibility on behalf of others, so I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him for help with it."He said, "Stay until the charity comes to us, and we will order that some be given to you."Then he said, "Qabisa, asking is not permitted except for one of three people. A man who has undertaken a financial responsibility, for him asking is permitted until he obtains what covers it, then he must stop. A man struck by a calamity that has destroyed his wealth, for him asking is permitted until he obtains what sustains his life, or he said, what suffices to keep him going. And a man afflicted by such poverty that three sensible men from his people testify, 'So-and-so has been struck by poverty,' for him asking is permitted until he obtains what sustains his life, or he said, what suffices to keep him going. Anything beyond these, Qabisa, is unlawful gain that the one who takes it consumes as something forbidden."

Sahih
