Imam Ahmad narrated it (22172) from Hajjaj, who said, I heard Shuba narrating from Qatada, and Hashim said, Shuba narrated to me, Qatada informed us, he said, I heard Abu Jad narrating (Hashim said in his narration, Abu Jad, a client of the tribe of Dubaya), from Abu Umama, and he mentioned it. This chain is hasan, and Abu Jad is "acceptable," because he has a corroborator. Shahr bin Hawshab corroborated him, and Imam Ahmad narrated it through three routes from Qatada, from him (22174, 22175, 22176), and Tabarani in Kabir (7573) through the route of Saeed bin Abu Aruba, which is one of Imam Ahmad's routes, from Qatada, from him. Likewise, Abdul-Rahman bin Adaa Kindi also corroborated him, saying, I heard Abu Umama, and he mentioned the same thing. Imam Ahmad also narrated it through this route (22180), as did Tabarani in Kabir (8008), and these routes strengthen one another.Something similar has been narrated from Ali bin Abu Talib, that a man from the people of the Suffah died leaving behind two dinars, or two dirhams, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Two cauterizing brands, pray over your companion." Imam Ahmad narrated it (788) from Affan, Jafar bin Sulayman narrated to us, Utayba narrated to us, from Bareed bin Asram, I heard Ali, and he mentioned it. Utayba, with the diminutive form, was from Basra. Bukhari mentioned him in Tarikh al-Kabir (4/96) and said, his chain of transmission is unknown. The Hafiz relied on this in Taqrib, saying, "unknown." Likewise his teacher Bareed bin Asram was mentioned by Ibn Hibban in Thiqat (4/22), but the Hafiz said of him, "unknown."Similarly, it has also been narrated from Jabir, who said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever leaves behind a dinar, it is a cauterizing brand." Imam Ahmad narrated it (14688) from Hasan, Ibn Lahia narrated to us, Abu Zubayr narrated to us, from Jabir, and he mentioned it. Ibn Lahia has well-known criticism against him.
