A black slave once joined the Prophet ﷺ, then died. The Prophet ﷺ was informed of his death, and he asked, "Look, did he leave anything behind?"They replied, "He left two Dinars."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Two brands of fire."
لحق بالنبي ﷺ عبد أسود فمات فأوذن النبي ﷺ فقال: انظروا هل ترك شيئا؟ فقالوا: ترك دينارين، فقال النبي ﷺ: كيتان.
Imam Ahmad (3843) and Abu Yaala (4997) both narrated it from the hadith of Zaidah, from Asim bin Abu Najud, from Zirr, from Abdullah, and he mentioned it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3263). Its isnad is hasan because of Asim bin Abu Najud, for he is hasan al-hadith.This man was one of the people of the Suffah, as mentioned in a narration found in Imam Ahmad (3914) (4367). It is well known that the people of the Suffah were poor, and people of goodness would provide them with food. So this man displayed poverty while he had enough to sustain himself, and that is why the Prophet ﷺ said of him, "A branding." As for a wealthy person, if he were to give away more than this, he would not be blamed for it, so long as he did not display poverty before the people.
