His family complained to him of their need, so he went out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask him for something on their behalf. He found him on the pulpit, saying, "People, the time has come for you to do without asking. Whoever seeks chastity, Allah will keep him chaste. Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no servant has been granted any provision more abundant than patience. And if you insist on asking me, I will give you whatever I have."
أن أهله شكوا إليه الحاجة، فخرج إلى رسول الله ﷺ ليسأله لهم شيئا، فوافقه على المنبر، وهو يقول: أيها الناس قد آن لكم أن تستغنوا عن المسألة، فإنه من يستعفف يعفه الله، ومن يستغن يغنه الله، والذي نفس محمد بيده ما رزق عبد شيئا أوسع من الصبر، ولئن أبيتم إلا أن تسألوني لأعطينكم ما وجدت.
Ibn Hibban (3399) narrated it through the route of Layth, from Ibn Ajlan, from Saeed Maqburi, from Abu Saeed Khudri, and he mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Ibn Ajlan, who is Muhammad bin Ajlan Madani, "truthful." However, the hadiths of Abu Hurairah became mixed up with him.It has other routes, including what Hammad bin Salama narrated, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, that Abu Saeed Khudri said, "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanting to ask him for something, and I heard him delivering a sermon, saying, 'Whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient. Whoever seeks to abstain from asking, Allah will grant him that restraint. And whoever asks us, we give him.'"He said, "So I went back and did not ask him, and today I am the wealthiest of the Ansar in property."Ibn Hibban narrated it (3398).
