Abu Talha had the most palm-tree wealth of any of the Ansar in Medina, and the most beloved of his properties to him was Bayruha, which faced the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enter it and drink from its sweet water.Anas said, "When this verse was revealed, 'You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love' [Al Imran 3:92], Abu Talha got up and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, Allah says, "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love." The most beloved of my properties to me is Bayruha, and it is now a charity for the sake of Allah. I hope for its righteousness and its reward stored with Allah. So place it, Messenger of Allah, wherever you wish.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Bravo! That is profitable wealth! That is profitable wealth! I have heard what you said about it, and I think you should give it to your close relatives."Abu Talha said, "I will do so, Messenger of Allah."So Abu Talha distributed it among his relatives and his cousins.
Malik narrated it in the chapter on charity (2) from Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abu Talha, that he heard Anas bin Malik say (as mentioned above). Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on agency (2318), and Muslim in the chapter on zakat (998), both of them from Yahya bin Yahya, who said, "I read it to Malik," with this wording.Muslim also narrated it through another route from Anas, who said, "When this verse was revealed, "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love" [Al Imran 3:92], Abu Talha said, 'I see that our Lord is asking us for our wealth. So bear witness, O Messenger of Allah, that I have given my land at Bayruha for the sake of Allah.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give it to your relatives." So he gave it to Hassan bin Thabit and Ubayy bin Kaab.
