Jabir bin Abdullah reported,
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Allah has never spoken to anyone except from behind a veil, but He spoke to your father face to face."

أن رسول الله ﷺ قال له: ما كلم الله أحدا إلا من وراء حجاب، وإنه كلم أباك كفاحا.
, "It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a veil or by sending a messenger to reveal by His permission what He wills…" Surah Shura, 51, "It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a veil or by sending a messenger to reveal by His permission what He wills…" Surah Shura, 51Tirmidhi (3010) and Ibn Majah (190) both narrated it through Musa bin Ibrahim bin Kathir Ansari Hizami, who said, I heard Talha bin Kharash say, I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, When Abdullah bin Amr bin Haram, that is, Jabir's father, was killed on the day of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah said to him, in a lengthy hadith that will come in its place. Its chain is hasan, because of the discussion regarding Talha bin Kharash, though he is hasan al-hadith.His words, "face to face," mean a direct encounter, with no veil between them, except that this speech occurred in the realm of the barzakh, whereas the verse itself refers to the worldly life, as Hafiz bin Kathir stated in his Tafsir.As for His words, "or send a messenger," this means sending the trustworthy spirit with the message to whomever He wills among His servants, as Allah, the Exalted, said, "And indeed, it is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds, brought down by the trustworthy spirit, upon your heart, that you may be of the warners" [Shuara 26:192–194]. The trustworthy spirit is Jibreel
