The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to give charity. One of us would go to the marketplace and carry loads for hire until he earned a mudd of food to give. Yet today, some of them have a hundred thousand.
كان رسول الله ﷺ أمرنا بالصدقة انطلق أحدنا إلى السوق فتحامل فيصيب المد وإن لبعضهم اليوم لمانة ألف.
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on zakat (1416) from Saeed bin Yahya, who said, "My father narrated to us, Amash narrated to us, from Shaqiq, from Abu Masud Ansari," and he related the hadith.Bukhari and Muslim both narrated it in agreement. Bukhari narrated it in tafsir (4668) and Muslim in the chapter on zakat (1018), both from the hadith of Muhammad bin Jafar, from Shubah, from Sulayman, from Abu Waail, from Abu Masud , who said,"When we were commanded to give charity, we used to carry loads for hire. Abu Aqeel came with half a saa, and another man came with more than that, so the hypocrites said, 'Allah has no need of this one's charity, and the other man did nothing but show off.' Then this was revealed, "Those who criticize the believers who give charity willingly, and those who find nothing to give except their own effort..." [Tawbah 9:79]."
