We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the early part of the day when a group of people came to him, barefoot and nearly naked, draped in striped woolen cloaks, or simply in cloaks, with swords slung over their shoulders. Most of them, indeed all of them, were from Mudar. The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed color when he saw the destitution they were in. He went inside, then came out and ordered Bilal to call the adhan and the iqamah. He then led the prayer, after which he addressed the people, reciting, "People, fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul," until the end of the verse, "Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer" [Nisa 4:1], and the verse in al-Hashr, "You who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow, and fear Allah" [Hashr 59:18].He said, "Let a man give in charity from his dinar, from his dirham, from his garment, from a sa of his wheat, from a sa of his dates," until he said, "even if it be half a date."Then a man from the Ansar came with a bag of money so heavy his hand could barely hold it, indeed, it could not. After that, the people followed in succession until I saw two heaps, one of food and one of clothing, and I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ beaming as if it were gilded with gold. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Whoever establishes a good practice in Islam will have its reward and the reward of all who act upon it after him, without their rewards being diminished in the least. And whoever establishes an evil practice in Islam will bear its burden and the burden of all who act upon it after him, without their burdens being diminished in the least."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1017), from Muhammad bin Muthanna Anazi, who said, Muhammad bin Jafar informed us, Shubah narrated to us, from Awn bin Abu Juhayfa, from Munzir bin Jareer, from his father, and he related it.He also narrated it through another route, from Abdul-Rahman bin Hilal Absi, from Jareer bin Abdullah, who said, "Some people from the desert Arabs came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing wool, and he saw their poor condition, for hardship had befallen them." Then he related it with the same meaning as their hadith.
