Abu Masud reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him out as a collector of zakat, then said, "Go forth, Abu Masud, but let me not find you on the Day of Resurrection coming with a camel from the zakat camels on your back, bellowing, which you had taken dishonestly."Abu Masud said, "In that case, I will not go."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Then I will not compel you."
بعثني رسول الله ﷺ ساعيا ثم قال: انطلق أبا مسعود ولا ألفينك يوم القيامة تجيء وعلى ظهرك بعير من إبل الصدقة له رغاء قد غللته. قال: إذا لا أنطلق. قال: إذا لا أكرهك.
Abu Dawud narrated it (2947) from Uthman bin Abu Shayba, who said, "Jareer narrated to us, from Mutarrif, from Abu Jahm, from Abu Masud," and he mentioned it.Abu Jahm is Sulayman bin Jahm bin Abu Jahm, Ansari, Harithi, Abu Jahm Juzjani, the freedman of Bara bin Azib. Ibn Adi said, "I do not know of anyone who narrated from him other than Mutarrif." Ibn Hibban and Ajli deemed him trustworthy, and Mutarrif bin Tareef, who narrated from him, praised him. So his narrations are hasan.Hafiz Haythami, may Allah have mercy on him, erred when he mentioned it in Majma (3/86), for it is not among the additional narrations. Hafiz Munziri got it right, attributing it in Targheeb to Abu Dawud alone.
