I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever among you we appoint to a task and he conceals from us even a needle or anything beyond that, it is misappropriation for which he will be answerable on the Day of Resurrection."A dark-skinned man from the Ansar stood up, I can almost see him now, and said, "Messenger of Allah, relieve me of the assignment you gave me."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is the matter with you?"The man replied, "I heard you say such and such."The Prophet ﷺ said, "I say it again now. Whoever among you we appoint to a task, let him bring whatever comes from it, little or much. Whatever he is given of it, he may take, and whatever he is forbidden, he must refrain from."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من استعملناه منكم على عمل فكتمنا مخيطا فما فوقه كان غلولا يأتي به يوم القيامة. قال: فقام إليه رجل أسود من الأنصار كأني أنظر إليه فقال: يا رسول الله أقبل عني عملك. قال: وما لك؟ قال: سمعتك تقول كذا وكذا قال: وأنا أقوله الآن من استعملناه منكم على عمل فليجئ بقليله وكثيره، فما أوتي منه أخذ وما نهي عنه انتهي.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Governance (1833), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Waki bin Jarra narrated to us, who said, Ismail bin Abu Khalid narrated to us, from Qays bin Abu Hazim, from Adi bin Umayra Kindi, who said (he then mentioned it).
