The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from al-Asd called Ibn al-Tunbiyah, Amr and Ibn Abu Umar said, over the collection of alms. When he returned, he said, "This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood on the pulpit, praised Allah and glorified Him, and said, "What is the matter with an official whom I send out, and he comes back saying, 'This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift'? Why does he not sit in his father's house or his mother's house and see whether gifts are brought to him or not? By Him in whose hand is Muhammad's soul, none of you takes anything from these alms wrongfully without bringing it on the Day of Resurrection carried on his neck, a camel that grunts, a cow that lows, or a sheep that bleats."Then he raised his hands until we could see the whiteness of his armpits and said, "O Allah, have I conveyed the message?" twice.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Oaths and Vows (6636), and Muslim in the Book of Governance (1832), both from the hadith of Zuhri, from Urwa, from Abu Humayd Saadi, and he related it. The wording given here is Muslim's, and Bukhari's wording is similar. Abu Humayd said, "Zayd bin Thabit heard this along with me from the Prophet ﷺ, so ask him." Ibn Lutbiyya is Abdullah bin Kutbiyya bin Thalaba Azdi. This story has also been narrated from Ayesha , who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man as a tax collector called Ibn Lutbiyya. He collected the tax, then returned to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have not left anything owed to you uncollected, and a gift was given to me, and I accepted the gift.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat on the pulpit and said, 'I send men out to collect the zakat, and one of them comes and says, "By Allah, I did not overstep, and I did not leave anything owed to you uncollected, and a gift was given to me, and I accepted the gift." Why did he not sit in his mother's hut and see whether anyone would give him a gift there? Beware, lest any of you come carrying on his shoulder a camel that groans, or a cow that bellows, or a sheep that bleats.'" Then he raised his hands until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen.Bazzar narrated it in Kashf Astar (899) from Muammar bin Sahl, who said, Ibrahim bin Ismail bin Nasr told us, Ibrahim bin Ismail bin Abu Habiba told us, from Dawud bin Husayn, from Yazid bin Ruman, from Urwa, from Ayesha, and he related it.Bazzar said, "Hisham and Zuhri narrated this from Urwa, from Abu Humayd, and Yazid bin Ruman narrated it from Urwa, from Abu Humayd, but Ibn Abu Habiba said it this way, and we do not know of it from Ayesha except by this route."Haythami said in Majmu (3/85), "In it is Ibrahim bin Ismail bin Abu Habiba, who is daif."I say, it is as he said, for Ibn Hibban said about this Ibrahim bin Ismail, "He used to invert chains of transmission and treat disconnected reports as connected." This may well be an instance of that. The majority of scholars judged him daif, though Ahmad held a favorable opinion of him.
