Aishah said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to me while I was in one of the orchards of Banu Najjar, in which were graves of some of them who had died in the days of ignorance. He heard them being punished, so he went out saying, 'Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.'"She said, "I asked, 'Messenger of Allah, are they really being punished in their graves?'He replied, 'Yes, with a punishment that the beasts can hear.'"
دخل علي رسول الله ﷺ وأنا في حائط من حوائط بني النجار، فيه قبور منهم قد ماتوا في الجاهلية، فسمعهم وهم يعذبون، فخرج وهو يقول: استعيذوا بالله من عذاب القبر قالت: قلت: يا رسول الله! وإنهم ليعذبون في قبورهم؟ قال: نعم عذابا تسمعه البهائم.
Imam Ahmad (27044), Tabarani in Al-Kabir (25/103), and Bayhaqi in Ithbat Azab Qabr (108) all narrated it, all of them through the route of Abu Muawiya, who said, "Amash narrated to us, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir, from Umm Mubashir," and he related it. Its chain is sahih, and Ibn Hibban also graded it sahih (3125). Haythami said in Al-Majma (3/56), "Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih," but he failed to attribute it to Tabarani.
