The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Abdullah bin Ubayy after he had been placed in his grave. He ordered that he be taken out, then he laid him on his knees, blew some of his saliva onto him, and clothed him in his own shirt. Allah knows best. Abdullah bin Ubayy had previously given Abbas a shirt to wear.Sufyan said, Abu Harun reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had two shirts on, so the son of Abdullah said to him, "Messenger of Allah, clothe my father in the shirt that touches your skin."Sufyan said, "They consider that the Prophet ﷺ clothed Abdullah in his shirt as a recompense for what he had done."The wording "Abu Harun said" is the correct one. In Bukhari's version it appears as "Abu Hurairah," which is a scribal error.
أتى رسول الله ﷺ عبد الله بن أبي بعد ما أدخل حفرته، فأمر به فأخرج، فوضعه على ركبتيه، ونفت عليه من ريقه، وألبسه قميصه، فالله أعلم وكان (أي عبد الله بن أبي) كسا عباسا قميصا. قال سفيان: وقال أبو هارون: وكان على رسول الله ﷺ قميصان، فقال له ابن عبد الله يا رسول الله! ألبس أبي قميصك الذي يلي جلدك. قال سفيان: فيرون أن النبي ﷺ ألبس عبد الله قميصه مكافأة لما صنع. قوله: قال أبو هارون هو الصحيح، وفي نسخة البخاري أبو هريرة، وهو تصحيف.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Funerals (1350), and Muslim in the Book of the Characteristics of the Hypocrites (2773), both from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Amr, who said, "I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say," and then he mentioned the hadith, the wording being Bukhari's. Muslim did not mention anything after his saying, "Allah knows best."Bukhari also narrated it (1270) through another route from Amr, in which it states, "The Prophet ﷺ came to Abdullah bin Abu after he had been buried, so he had him taken out and blew on him..."His saying, "after Abdullah bin Abu had been buried," means after he had been placed in his grave, as in the first narration, not that he had been buried and the earth thrown over him. Abdullah bin Abu's family feared the hardship it would cause the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to be present, so they hastened to prepare him before the Prophet arrived. When he arrived, he found that they had already lowered him into his grave, so he ordered that he be taken out, in fulfillment of his promise to shroud him in his own shirt and pray over him.
