The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of the many wounded and slain on the day of Uhud. He said, "Dig the graves, make them wide and well-prepared, and bury two and three men in a single grave. Place the one with the most knowledge of the Quran at the front."The narrator said, "My father died, so he was placed at the front of two other men."In another narration, "My father was killed on the day of Uhud, and the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Dig the graves, make them wide and well-prepared, bury two and three men in one grave, and place the one with the most knowledge of the Quran at the front.' My father was one of three, and he had the most knowledge of the Quran, so he was placed at the front."
Tirmidhi (1713) and Ibn Majah (1560) both narrated it from Azhar bin Marwan, who said, "Abdul-Warith bin Saeed narrated to us, he said, Ayub narrated to us, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Abu Dahma, from Hisham bin Amir," and he related the hadith. The wording given is Tirmidhi's. Ibn Majah's wording is abbreviated. Nasai (2017) narrated it through another route from Abdul-Warith, and Ahmad (16262) recorded the hadith through the route of Ayub with his own chain, and the second narration is found in Nasai.Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih. Sufyan Thawri and others narrated this hadith from Ayub, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Hisham bin Amir. Abu Dahma's name is Qarafa bin Buhays or Bayhas."I say, the second narration is found in Abu Dawud (3216) and Nasai (2010) through the route of Sufyan, as Tirmidhi said, and in Imam Ahmad (16251) and Abu Dawud (3215) through the route of Sulayman bin Mughira, from Humayd bin Hilal, with the same wording. There is disagreement about whether Humayd bin Hilal actually heard from Hisham bin Amir. Abu Hatim said, as recorded in Maraseel (171), "Humayd bin Hilal never met Hisham bin Amir. Between him and Hisham comes Abu Qatada Adawi, and some say, from Abu Dahma. The hadith masters do not insert anyone between them, Humayd narrating from Hisham directly." He was asked, "Which of these is more sahih?" He said, "What Hammad bin Zayd narrated, from Ayub, from Humayd, from Hisham."I say, it appears that Humayd did hear from Hisham bin Amir, as is explicitly stated in the narration of Mamar, from Ayub, from him, who said, "Hisham bin Amir informed us," and then he related the hadith. Imam Ahmad (16261) narrated it from Abdul-Razzaq, from Mamar with his chain, and Ibn Hajar also stated this explicitly in Ithaf Mahra (13/632). With this, both chains are shown to be sahih, and Ibn Hajar also acknowledged, in Talkhis (127/2), Tirmidhi's grading of it as sahih.
