The Prophet ﷺ prayed over a funeral and pronounced four takbirs over it. Then he came to the grave of the deceased and threw three handfuls of earth onto it from the direction of the head.
أن النبي ﷺ صلى على جنازة فكبر عليها أربعا، ثم أتى قبر الميت فحثا عليه من قبل رأسه ثلاثا.
Ibn Majah (1565) narrated it from Abbas bin Walid, who said, Yahya bin Salih told me, who said, Salama bin Kulthum told us, who said, Uzai told us, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned the hadith, except that he did not mention "he said the takbir over it four times." Mizzi only narrated it in the biography of Salama bin Kulthum (2450) with his chain, from Abu Bakr Abdullah bin Abu Dawud, who said, Abbas bin Walid bin Subh Khallal told us with his chain.Abu Bakr bin Abu Dawud said, "There is no sahih hadith narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that 'he said the takbir over a funeral four times' except this one. No one narrated it except Salama. What is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ is that 'he said the takbir over Najashi four times' and that 'he prayed over a grave and said the takbir four times.'"Munziri quoted the words of Abu Bakr bin Abu Dawud in his Mukhtasar of Abu Dawud, and its wording is as follows, "There is no sahih hadith narrated from the Prophet ﷺ, that 'he said the takbir over a funeral four times' except this one. No one narrated it except Salama bin Kulthum, who is trustworthy and one of the senior companions of Uzai." He said, "What is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ through an established route is that 'he said the takbir over a grave four times' and that 'he said the takbir over Najashi four times.' But as for over a funeral in this manner, no, except the hadith of Salama bin Kulthum." Munziri said, this is the end of his words. In it is Ibn Abu Dawud's confirmation that this hadith is sahih.I say, its chain is hasan because of Salama bin Kulthum, for he is one whose hadith is hasan, not rising to the level of "trustworthy."
