The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit Abdullah bin Thabit and found him overcome by illness. He called out to him, but Abdullah did not respond. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We belong to Allah and to Him we return," and added, "We have been overcome regarding you, Abu Rabi."The women cried out and began weeping, and Jabir tried to silence them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them. But once it has become due, let no woman weep."They asked, "Messenger of Allah, what is meant by becoming due?"He replied, "When he dies."His daughter said, "By Allah, I had hoped you would be a martyr, for you had already prepared your provisions for the campaign."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has granted him his reward according to his intention. And what do you consider martyrdom to be?"They said, "Being killed in the cause of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are seven kinds of martyrs besides those killed in the cause of Allah. The one who dies of plague is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr, the one who dies of a stomach illness is a martyr, the one who dies by fire is a martyr, the one who dies under a collapsed structure is a martyr, and the woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr."
It was narrated by Abu Dawud (3111) and Nasai (1846), both through the route of Malik (it is in the Muwatta, Funerals chapter, 36) from Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Jabir bin Atik, from Atik bin Harith, who was the grandfather of Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Jabir on his mother's side, that he informed him that Jabir bin Atik informed him, and he related it.Imam Ahmad also narrated it (23753) through the route of Malik, except that he abridged it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (3189), as did Hakim (1/351-352), and both of them narrated it through the route of Malik. Hakim said, "Sahih in isnad, and the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not include it, its narrators are from Madinah and Quraysh..."I say, its isnad is hasan because of Atik bin Harith, who is Atik bin Qays bin Haysha al-Muawi al-Awsi al-Ansari, one of the people of Madinah. He narrated from Jabir bin Atik and a group of companions, and Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Jabir bin Atik and others narrated from him, as stated in Ibn Hibban's Thiqat (5/286). Although I did not find anyone who declared him reliable, the fact that he is among the narrators of Malik in the Muwatta gives him added strength, because Malik was the most knowledgeable of people about the people of Madinah. As for whoever caused confusion in narrating this hadith, it does not harm the one who established it correctly.Ibn Majah narrated it (2803) through another route, from Abu Umays, from Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Jabir bin Atik, from his father, from his grandfather, that he fell ill and the Prophet ﷺ came to visit him, and someone from his family said, "We had hoped that your death would be martyrdom in the cause of Allah..." He made an error in the isnad.Ibn Abdul-Barr said in Tamhid (19/206), "This is how Abu Umays states the isnad of this hadith, but the correct version is what Malik said about it, and Abu Umays did not establish it correctly."His saying, "You have completed your preparation," means you have made ready what you need for your journey of military expedition, or your journey to the afterlife, in terms of provisions or righteous deeds.
