It was mentioned in the presence of Imran bin Husayn that the deceased is punished due to the weeping of the living. Imran said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it."
قال ذكر عند عمران بن حصين: الميت يعذب ببكاء الحي، فقال عمران: قاله ﷺ.
Nasai (1849) narrated it from Mahmud bin Ghaylan, who said, Abu Dawud narrated to us, who said, Shuba narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Subayh, who said, I heard Muhammad bin Sirin say what has been mentioned. The hadith is found in Musnad Abu Dawud Tayalisi (895), and from that route Ibn Hibban reported it in his Sahih (3134). Imam Ahmad (19918) and Tabarani (18/440) both narrated it, both by way of Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Shuba narrated to us with his chain, and in it, they mentioned before Imran bin Husayn the saying, "The dead person is punished for the weeping of the living," and they said, "How can the dead be punished for the weeping of the living?" Imran said, "He said it ﷺ." Its chain is hasan because of Abdullah bin Subayh, for his hadith is hasan.As for what is narrated from Hasan, from Imran bin Husayn, who said, "The dead person is punished for his family's wailing over him," a man said to him, "What do you say about a man who died in Khurasan and whose family wailed over him here, would he be punished for his family's wailing?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke the truth, and you have lied." This chain has a break in it. Nasai (1854) narrated it by this route, and Hasan did not hear from Imran bin Husayn according to the well known view, though it has also been said that he did hear from him.
