Bukhari narrated it in the chapters on funerals (1292) from Abdan, who said, "My father informed me, from Shuba, from Qatada, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Ibn Umar, from his father," and he related the hadith. Muslim narrated it in the chapters on funerals (1927) through Muhammad bin Jafar, from Shuba, in the same manner.The second version was narrated by Bukhari from Adam, from Shuba, with the same chain mentioned above, and Muslim narrated it through several routes from Muhammad bin Bishr Abdi, from Ubaydullah bin Umar, who said, "Nafi told us, from Abdullah, that Hafsa wept over Umar, so he said, "Gently, my daughter! Did you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The dead person is punished by the weeping of his family over him"?"" Muslim has other routes conveying the same meaning, and in one wording, "The one wept over is punished." Al-mual is derived from "awwala alayhi" and "aala," meaning weeping aloud.In another version, from Abu Musa, who said, "When Umar was struck, Suhayb came from his house until he entered upon Umar. He stood facing him, weeping, so Umar said, "What are you weeping over? Are you weeping over me?" He said, "Yes, by Allah, I am indeed weeping over you, commander of the faithful!" Umar said, "By Allah, I knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is wept over is punished."" He said, "I mentioned that to Musa bin Talha, and he said, "Ayesha used to say, "That only applied to the Jews.""""Tirmidhi said, "The hadith of Umar is a hasan sahih hadith. Some scholars disliked weeping over the dead. They said, "The dead person is punished by the weeping of his family over him," relying on this hadith. Ibn Mubarak said, "I hope that if he forbade them during his lifetime, none of that will be held against him.""
