Among the things the Messenger of Allah ﷺ required of us in matters of righteous conduct, in which we were not to disobey him, were that we should not scratch our faces, cry out in lamentation, tear our garments, or let our hair down loose.
كان فيما أخذ علينا رسول الله ﷺ في المعروف الذي أخذ علينا: أن لا نعصيه فيه، أن لا نخمش وجها، ولا ندعو ويلا، ولا نشق جيبا، وأن لا ننشر شعرا.
Abu Dawud (3131) narrated it from Musaddad, who said, Humayd bin Aswad told us, Hajjaj, who was Umar bin Abdul-Aziz's governor over Rabaza, told us, Usayd bin Abu Usayd told me, from a woman among those who gave the pledge, and he mentioned it.In the chain are Humayd bin Aswad, his teacher Hajjaj, who is the son of Safwan, and his teacher Usayd bin Abu Usayd. None of them rise to the level of "trustworthy," rather they are close to the level of "truthful."As for the woman who gave the pledge, she may well be Umm Atiya, since she gave the pledge to the Prophet ﷺ on that matter, as her story has already been related.
